Police Seek Roommate Attacker

Police are seeking a man they say attacked his roommate Tuesday afternoon. 48-year old Herbert Daniel Purol wound up at RiverBend Hospital with multiple injuries

Purol told police he was listening to music in his living room about 15 miles north of Florence when he was attacked by 62-year old Buddy E. Valentine.

Valentine allegedly struck Purol with a hammer before dousing him with lighter fluid.

Valentine has been known to go by other names, including Byron Mathew McArthur.

Police say they are looking for Buddy E. Valentine, also known as Byron Mathew McArthur, Buddy Eric, and several variations in the spelling of those names in connection with an attack on his roommate Tuesday, August 26th. (Lane County Sheriff's Office photo).

The 11:15 AM call from Purol triggered a lengthy and considerable police response. Because it was in the far northwest portion of Lane County, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies responded initially. A line of police vehicles, most from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, continued to respond with lights and sirens through Florence over the next two hours.

Sergeant Dave Rogers with the Sheriff’s office says anyone who sees Valentine should call 911 immediately.

More information, including a photo of Valentine, is below.

Florence Voters Have Choices

Voters in Florence will have three candidates to choose from when it comes to selecting a Mayor in November. The filing period for municipal races closed yesterday afternoon. Incumbent Nola Xavier is seeking her second term, but she’s being challenged by Joe Henry and Alan Burns. She is a retired employment specialist and before being elected Mayor in 2012 served eight years on the City Council.

Henry was elected to the city council two years ago and had to submit his resignation effective January 1st in order to be eligible to seek the Mayor’s post. He is an independent mortgage broker.

Burns served on the city council and as Mayor for a total of 12 years with his last term as Mayor ending in 2006. He was appointed to the city Planning Commission two years ago. He and his wife own Burns’ Riverside Chapel.

Voters will decide on three new city councilors in November. George Lyddon, Mildred Rowley, Susie Lacer and Shayne Burnem are each seeking one of two four-year terms. Ronald Preisler and Clarence Lysdale are vying for the shorter two-year term.

Dunes City Ballot Has Empty Spaces

Voters in Dunes City won’t have any choices unless they pencil their own candidates in.

Rebecca Ruede will be the sole name on the ballot for Mayor, a post she has held for four years.

Sheldon Meyer is seeking election to the council spot he was appointed to late last year; and Duke Wells would like to be reelected to his spot.

Richard Anderson opted not to seek reelection and nobody else filed leaving an opening on the ballot. That could be filled by a write-in candidate at this point. Barring that, the incoming council would declare the seat vacant in January and make an appointment.

Oktoberfest Set for Florence Events Center

Pancakes, beer, bratwurst, German music and Weiner Dog races will take center stage at the Florence Events Center October 4th.

The first three versions were known as Septoberfest, with the first two held at the Florence Elks Lodge.

Last year’s event was moved to a large tent on the Boardwalk in Old Town. An unexpected and powerful September storm kept most participants away. This year’s festival sought out more secure and dry quarters.

Oktoberfest, as it will be called, will start with a pancake breakfast presented by the Florence Kiwanis, followed by authentic German music and beer. Several non-profit groups will staff the food fair.

One tradition begun last year will continue: Weiner Dog Races.
