SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) – The Seattle Storm have won the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft lottery. The Tulsa Shock was awarded the second pick last night, with Connecticut picking third and fourth. The Storm finished tied with Tulsa for the league’s worst record at 12-22 and each had a 35.9 percent chance of landing the No. 1 pick.
UPDATED (AP) – A person close to the situation says Phoenix’s Sandy Brondello has won the WNBA coach of the year award. The person says Brondello will receive the award tonight in Phoenix. She received 33 of the 38 votes with Minnesota’s Cheryl Reeve and Washington’s Mike Thibault each getting two, the person said.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – No more rookie excuses for Thomas Tyner. Oregon’s sophomore running back is ready to live up to the expectations that were heaped on him when he joined the Ducks last year. As a true freshman Tyner was third on the Ducks with 711 yards rushing, and he scored nine touchdowns. Tyner says he’s ready, having matured as a player since last season.
SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP) – It will remain a sore spot with Fred Couples until he’s finally able to add the accomplishment to his resume. For all the tournament’s won during his career, Couples has still never won playing back home in or around Seattle where he grew up. Couples is back at the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge this week trying to win that elusive hometown title in the 10th edition of the popular tournament.
