PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Portland for a vigil and moment of silence last night to protest the death of a black teenager shot by a police officer in Missouri. Similar vigils in more than 90 cities across the country drew thousands. KGW-TV reports that Mayor Charlie Hales estimated the Portland crowd at about 400.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s Medicaid program will soon cover gender reassignment surgery, hormone therapy and other treatments for transgender patients. A panel of health experts yesterday added gender dysphoria to the list of treatments covered by the Oregon Health Plan, Oregon’s version of Medicaid. The program provides health coverage for nearly 1 million people in Oregon.

TROUTDALE, Ore. (AP) – Police say a 54-year-old Gresham man died when his motorcycle collided with a deer north of the Troutdale Airport. A police news release says the crash happened shortly before sunrise yesterday as Michael Roland was driving to work. Roland died at the scene and officers euthanized the severely injured deer.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The head of Oregon’s Corrections Department has announced the appointment of new superintendents to lead two state prisons. The agency says Colette Peters has selected John Myrick as superintendent of Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla and Kimberly Hendricks as superintendent of Shutter Creek Correctional Institution in North Bend.
