Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) – This is how good Felix Hernandez has pitched in making himself the clear leader for a second Cy Young award. The ace of the Seattle Mariners has set the pace for a pitching staff that’s on a record pace not seen from an American League team in 40 years. Seattle has a pitching staff that has a combined 2.95 ERA.

SEATTLE (AP) – Brock Coyle isn’t likely to be a starter in the NFL anytime soon. But he’s getting every chance to earn a spot on the Seattle Seahawks roster. The linebacker will likely be the one responsible for calling Seattle’s first defensive play in the huddle when the Seahawks face the San Diego Chargers tonight.

UNDATED (AP) – Ohio State has added home football games with UNLV of the Mountain West in 2017 and the Pac 12’s Oregon State in 2018. The Rebels come to Columbus on Sept. 23, 2017, and the Beavers will open the 2018 season on Sept. 1. Those games fill the void left when Ohio State and North Carolina agreed to cancel a two-game series set for those years.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) – Chicago’s Pierce Jones hit three home runs yesterday, including a first-inning leadoff shot, to lead the Jackie Robinson West team to a 12-2 victory over Lynnwood of Washington state. Jones also tripled and finished with four RBIs. The game was shortened from six innings to five because of a 10-run margin after at least four innings.
