SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Two men suspected of killing a Salem man
Sunday morning have been arrested in California. Sheriff’s
spokesman Don Thomson tells the Statesman Journal 29-year-old
Nicholas Chavez and 18-year-old Jhosuamil Colon Lebron are jailed
in California. He says they were arrested Sunday near Yreka without
offering resistance and will appear in court this week. The victim
was identified as 23-year-old David Polanco.
UNDATED (AP) – Polk County District Attorney Stan Butterfield
says he hasn’t decided whether to go forward with a new trial for
Philip Scott Cannon, after missing evidence from his murder trial
reappeared. Cannon was convicted of three murders, but was set free
when the four boxes of evidence disappeared, making a new trial
impossible. Oregon Attorney General John Kroger says the boxes were
found at the Oregon Department of Justice.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A group opposed to the death penalty has
filed a motion with the Oregon Supreme Court in an attempt to block
the execution of twice-convicted murderer Gary Haugen. A Marion
County judge this month found Haugen competent to waive his appeals
and be executed. The Oregon Capital Resource Center filed the
Supreme Court motion yesterday, arguing that a psychologist’s
report suggesting Haugen may be incompetent was improperly ignored.
The organization also argues that one of Haugen’s current lawyers
has a conflict of interest.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland city commissioner says the
Occupy Portland camp is damaging two city parks. Commissioner Nick
Fish oversees the Parks Bureau. He issued an open letter Monday to
demonstrators who have been using the area for nearly two weeks,
urging protesters to make changes to minimize the strain on the
side-by-side parks. City officials estimate damage at $19,000. The
Occupy Portland website says many protesters share the concerns and
there are “informal plans” to provide money and/or labor to
rehabilitate the parks.
