GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) – An off-duty Portland police sergeant has been arrested by Gresham police for investigation of drunken driving, reckless driving and criminal mischief. KATU-TV reports that police say Sgt. James McMurray is accused of crashing his car into a fire hydrant, fence and yard yesterday morning. Portland police say the 18-year department veteran is on paid leave.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Some of the hundreds of people forced to flee a wind-driven wildfire in Oregon’s Columbia Gorge east of Portland were allowed to return yesterday and were happy to find their houses intact. Some of those homes were within 30 feet of flames. The Rowena fire started Tuesday evening in brush, and by yesterday, it had grown to 4.1 square miles. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

WOODLAND, Wash. (AP) – The body found recently in the Columbia River near Woodland, Washington, has been found to be that of an Oregon woman missing since January 2013. The Daily News of Longview reports the coroner used dental records to identify the body of 29-year-old Lynn Paan-Saephan of St. Helens, who disappeared from a residential mental health home. The cause of death was drowning.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The drowning of a 7-year-old boy in the Rogue River in Grants Pass last week has inspired some people to offer the free use of lifejackets at popular spots along the river. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports that the non-profit Grants Pass Active Club and Umpqua Bank are coordinating the project.
