PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Steven Evans got the biggest cheers last night at the inaugural MLS Homegrown Game. Evans grew up in Portland and played at the University of Portland. After college, Evans signed with the Timbers as the team’s second homegrown player. Last night, he was captain of a group of players from the program that seeks to develop team academy players. They played the Timbers U23 team to a 0-0 draw.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch returned to practice for the first time since reporting to training camp late last week, but who will block for him at right tackle this season remains in question. The Seahawks released Michael Bowie on Saturday after it was determined his injured shoulder would require surgery. With Bowie gone, the battle for the starting job shifts firmly to second-round pick Justin Britt and veteran Eric Winston.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon opens fall camp as the early favorite in the Pac-12. There’s good reason: Quarterback Marcus Mariota is back. Mariota averaged nearly 282 yards passing per game and threw for 31 touchdowns with only four interceptions last season. He also rushed for 715 yards and nine scores. His 4,380 yards of total offense set a school record.
UNDATED (AP) – Sean Mannion went into last year’s fall camp uncertain whether he would be the starter. This season, the uncertainty centers on who will emerge as his go-to receiver. He’ll need a new favorite target now that Brandin Cooks has moved on to the New Orleans Saints.
