CANNON BEACH, Ore. (AP) — Police say the mother of a toddler found dead at a coastal Oregon resort is in custody. The Oregonian reports Jessica Smith was found east of Cannon Beach off a logging road. Authorities had said the mother of the toddler and a teen girl found seriously injured in a resort room was wanted on suspicion of murder.

BURNEY, Calif. (AP) — In Siskiyou County, California — which borders Oregon — firefighters are battling two major fires, both started by lightning last week. One of them, which began in Oregon, threatened hundreds of structures and charred nearly 58 square miles in both states as of last night. It burned three homes and other structures, and evacuations remained in place for several neighborhoods in both states.

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a Colorado man fell to his death from a cliff at Benham Falls in Central Oregon. Cyclists found 62-year-old Daniel Lowry unconscious Saturday in shallow water at the base of the cliff, and paramedics were unable to revive him. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office says the man planned to go kayaking and was probably scouting the area when he fell.

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Brandon Hardin is tired of the injuries. The free-agent safety — cut Friday by the New York Jets — just wants to play football, but his body keeps defying him. Hardin missed his final college season at Oregon State with a shoulder injury, hurt his neck in his rookie year in Chicago in 2012 and had a shoulder injury last summer. Now a foot injury has Hardin looking for a job.
