ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – Fire officials say a wildifre threatening about 270 structures on the Oregon-California border has grown to nearly 51 square miles. The fire that started by lightning on Thursday has burned three homes, five outbuildings and multiple vehicles. Several neighborhoods southwest of Ashland were still evacuated yesterday. More than 1000 people are fighting a complex of fires including the Oregon Gulch blaze.

CANNON BEACH, Ore. (AP) – Authorities searching for the mother of a slain toddler and critically injured teen girl who were found in a room at a coastal Oregon resort say she is now wanted on suspicion of murder. The Oregonian reports that Cannon Beach Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn said yesterday the cause of death of the 2-year-old remains unknown after an autopsy. But it determined her death was a homicide. Schermerhorn says the girl suffered no obvious injuries and a toxicology test is pending.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A settlement agreement in a Lane County drunk driving lawsuit appears to award slightly more than $180,000 to the victim’s heirs. The Register-Guard reports the mother and two children of a Cottage Grove woman killed by a drunken driver in 2012 have settled for just over $60,000 each in a wrongful death lawsuit The suit was filed against the driver and two restaurants that allegedly served him alcohol on the night of the wreck.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities arrested a man who was tight-rope walking on the cables of a Portland bridge. Portland police say 21-year-old Benjamin Lovitz was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. Police were called to the Steel Bridge early Saturday by people who thought he might be a jumper. Instead, Lovitz was walking the wires between the bridge’s two tallest towers. Police blocked off the entire bridge until Lovitz came down. He was quickly arrested.
