SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state of Oregon is moving toward a smoking ban on all 362 miles of beaches along the Pacific coast. Earlier this year a ban on smoking was imposed at most other state-park property. State officials say the ban would reduce litter on beaches.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – A Coast Guard crew came to the aid of a commercial fishing vessel that was taking on water about 10 miles north of the Yaquina (yuh-KEEN-uh) Bay bar. A Coast Guard spokesman says the crew passed portable pumps to the 60-foot fishing vessel Endeavor and escorted it to the Port of Newport.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Federal regulators say they will issue an environmental review this February on the proposed pipeline across southwestern Oregon to carry natural gas from Wyoming to the Port of Coos Bay for export to Asia. The Herald and News reports conservation groups have been fighting the pipeline proposal, arguing it will amount to a continuous clearcut that threatens forests, salmon, water quality and wildlife.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Dale Schlueter, a member of the Portland Trail Blazers for their inaugural 1970-71 season, died yesterday after battling cancer. He was 68. Schlueter was acquired by the Blazers in 1970 and averaged 8.2 points in the team’s first season. The 6-foot-10 center had two stints in Portland, from 1970-72 and again for the 1977-78 season.
