PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – It’s official: an initiative to require the labeling of genetically modified foods in Oregon has qualified for a statewide vote in November. If adopted, the initiative would require manufacturers, retailers and suppliers to label raw and packaged foods produced entirely or partially by genetic engineering. Vermont, Maine and Connecticut have enacted laws that require labeling of GMOs.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – State officials say five Oregon home-based child-care centers are owned by people who have medical marijuana cards. Until now, medical marijuana card holders have been able to get licenses to run day-care centers as long as they don’t use marijuana in front of children in their care, among other conditions. But now, Gov. John Kitzhaber says owners should have to choose between their child-care license and their marijuana card.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police detectives have arrested the suspect in a Josephine County killing who eluded them last week. Forty-four-year-old Daniel Martinson was wanted on a felony warrant for murder in connection with the November 2013 death of 39-year-old Aaron Lee Clouser of Cave Junction. Police said last week that Martinson gave law enforcement officers the slip on a motorcycle during a manhunt in the forests near the California state line.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A recently retired police dog for the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has died, and investigators are checking to see if poison is the cause. Undersheriff Jim Littlefield says a veterinarian suspects the 9-year-old German shepherd named Yosh died from poisoning, but detectives still need hard evidence.
