GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Fire officials in Oregon say they’ve gotten several dozen reports of new wildfire starts after lightning rolled through much of the state. That news came as firefighters made progress in their battle against 11 major wildfires already burning across Oregon. Fire crews were dispatched quickly across central Oregon. By late last night, the dispatch center said it was responding to more than 40 reports, with many of those fire starts already encircled by fire line and contained.

ECHO, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Transportation Department says a 54-year-old highway worker has been killed in a workplace accident in northeast Oregon. The department said 29-year highway department veteran Donald Kendall died yesterday during a chip seal paving operation. A Transportation spokesman said no details were immediately available.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A Clark County sheriff’s spokesman says the body of a man has been found hanging from a tree near the southbound lanes of Interstate 205 in southwest Washington. The Columbian reports the “suspicious death” report came in yesterday afternoon. Sgt. Duncan Hoss says the body had been there quite a while. There was no immediate word on the identity of the body.

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – Sheriff’s deputies say a 43-year-old Coos Bay man died when his ATV rolled over near his home. The World newspaper reports that Eric Osterson left his home Monday to ride the four-wheeler on West Fork Millicoma Road. Deputies say the ATV had gone off the road, up an embankment, and rolled over.
