Gubernatorial Debate Set for Tomorrow

The Election season in Oregon officially gets under way tomorrow in Salem when the two top candidates for Oregon Governor square off for a debate.

The 90-minute matchup between Democrat incumbent John Kitzhaber and Republican representative Dennis Richardson will take place during the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association Convention. A panel of five editors, publishers and reporters will quiz the two.

Richardson says he hopes to discuss the difficulties Cover Oregon faced while the state attempted to launch a healthcare exchange system. He will also, no doubt, try to work the state’s low ranking for high school graduation rates and high unemployment rate into the conversation.

Kitzhaber, meanwhile, didn’t specify any topics he would like to see covered.

The debate at the Salem Convention Center is not open to the public, but will be broadcast live on the internet. It begins at 10:15 tomorrow and you can watch it at statesmanjournal.com.

Alleged Attackers Call Police When Victim Fights Back

Two Coos County men were arrested early yesterday morning after calling police to say a man grabbed a shotgun and fired two shots into the air.

What the two men didn’t tell police initially was that they had allegedly gone to the third man’s home with a baseball bat and several aggressive dogs because they believe that the man had reported them for trespassing on public land.

Sheriff’s deputies say the men took turns beating the man with the bat, causing severe head injuries. He was able to get free, grabbed the shotgun and fired two shots into the air.

The two alleged attackers fled to a nearby home where they called 911.

The 23-year old victim was taken to Bay Area Hospital; the 25-and-27 year old bat-wielders were arrested and charged with assault.

Undersea Quake

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake rumbled deep beneath the ocean floor off the Oregon Coast at 8:30 yesterday morning. Nobody on shore reported feeling it and there was no damage.

The quake was centered about 125 miles west of Bandon at a depth of about six miles.

126 Closed Wednesday Afternoon Following Crash

One person died at the scene and another suffered serious injuries following a head-on crash just east of Veneta that closed Highway 126 for more than three hours yesterday afternoon.

According to Oregon State Police an unnamed elderly female driving a Toyota Prius was westbound near Fern Ridge Reservoir when her car crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound sport utility.

The woman died at the scene, the other driver was extricated from the wreckage and transported to River Bend hospital.
