KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Officials say a fast-growing wildfire in southern Oregon has destroyed homes and forced dozens of evacuations. Fire managers say a blaze erupted near Sprague (sprag) River around 2 p.m. yesterday and had mushroomed to more than 600 acres by nightfall. The South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership says the wildfire burning in the Moccasin Hill neighborhood has destroyed an undetermined number of homes and other structures.

ALOHA, Ore. (AP) – A suspected burglar was arrested after he fell about 40 feet from a tree after being chased by deputies from the Washington County sheriff’s office. KATU-TV reports deputies found 46-year-old Bret Davis in a tree in Aloha on Saturday afternoon after chasing him through a wooded area. Deputies say Davis refused to come down from the tree. He climbed higher instead, before falling.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Military veterans account for nearly a quarter of Oregon’s suicides, even though veterans make up less than 10 percent of the state’s population. That’s according to a report by the Oregon Health Authority that analyzed data from the state’s Violent Death Reporting System from 2008 to 2012. The Oregonian reports that the suicides covered all age groups.

HEPPNER, Ore. (AP) – A former volunteer firefighter was sentenced to five and a half years in prison after burglarizing and burning down a home in November. The East Oregonian reports that 34-year-old Joseph Edward Kindle of Heppner pleaded no contest to arson on Thursday. He also pleaded guilty to theft, burglary and felon in possession of a firearm.
