PHOENIX (AP) – Penny Taylor scored 14 points to lead a balanced offense and the Phoenix Mercury used a 19-0 run in the second quarter to rout the Seattle Storm 78-58 yesterday for a franchise-record eighth straight win. Brittney Griner added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Mercury (14-3), who have the best record in the league. Angel Robinson scored 10 points to lead the Storm (8-13).

TUKWILA, Wash. (AP) – Kenny Cooper scored on a header in the 110th minute and the Seattle Sounders advanced to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals with a 3-1 win over the Portland Timers last night. Cooper’s goal came in the second half of extra time after Darlington Nagbe’s goal in the final seconds of regulation forced an additional 30 minutes of play.

SEATTLE (AP) – Kendrys Morales knocked in three runs and Kyle Gibson pitched six shutout innings to lead the Minnesota Twins to an 8-1 rout of the Seattle Mariners last night. Roenis Elias (7-8) lasted a career-low 3 1-3 innings, yielding seven runs – six earned – and seven hits with three walks.

SEATTLE (AP) -The Seattle Mariners have optioned starter Taijuan Walker to Triple-A Tacoma so he can remain on schedule during the All-Star break. Seattle recalled reliever Stephen Pryor yesterday to take Walker’s spot in the roster. The Mariners will likely use their bullpen to get through today’s series finale against Minnesota.
