EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Three people have been arrested in a protest at a wood-burning power plant in Eugene. The Register-Guard reports that the protesters spoke out against Seneca Jones Timber Co.’s purchase of public forestland east of Reedsport and repeated previous claims that the Seneca Sustainable Energy biomass cogeneration plant is a polluter. Seneca General Manager Todd Payne called the protest a “slight inconvenience.”

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A Marion County sheriff’s officer says deputies are investigating the drowning of a teenage boy at the Three Pools recreational area in the eastern part of the county. Sgt. Chris Baldridge said yesterday afternoon that officers were notifying relatives and didn’t expect to release any other details until today.

CRESWELL, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police have arrested a 24-year-old man after a chase on Interstate 5 that reached speeds over 100 mph and may have involved a gunshot fired at a passing truck. Lt. Gregg Hastings says James Voshell of Tacoma, Washington, was booked into the Lane County Jail in Eugene. Police say the speeding car was stolen in Washington state.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley’s re-election campaign says the Oregon Democrat raised $1.2 million during the latest fundraising period. It brings Merkley’s total to $3.5 million in the bank with no debt. He faces Republican Monica Wehby in November. Wehby’s second-quarter fundraising totals have not yet been made public.
