EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A former high school athletic trainer in Eugene has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing a student. The Register-Guard reports that a jury found 29-year-old Timothy Schley guilty last week of sexual contact with the Willamette High School student. The judge also barred Schley from having contact with the victim for five years. The girl was in the courtroom and broke down in tears at the sentencing.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon fire bosses report that an area of Southern Oregon where lightning touched off major fires last year got hit by lightning overnight. About 85 strikes have so far produced only one small fire in Douglas County. Lightning strikes can smolder for a day or more before igniting a larger fire.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A police detective says a man accused of robbing a Portland bank told investigators he was having a hard time controlling a heroin addiction. The Oregonian reports that Dennis McDonald was ordered detained as a flight risk. It was not immediately clear whether he had a lawyer.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – The Coast Guard has rescued three people after their boat capsized off Newport. The commanding officer of the Coast Guard station at Yaquina Bay saw the boat flip after it was hit by the wake of a passing vessel. None of the three wore life jackets. The rescued trio were reported in good condition.
