SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Sponsors of an initiative to legalize recreational marijuana in Oregon say they delivered 145,000 signatures to the Capitol. If Oregonians approve the measure in November, the state would join Colorado and neighboring Washington state in legalizing recreational pot. The measure would legalize pot for adults over 21.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A grand jury deliberated for less than 10 minutes before announcing that two sheriff’s deputies were legally justified when they shot and killed an Ashland man who was being evicted from his house. A District Attorney said that 73-year-old Earl Harris was advancing toward a Jackson County deputy with a loaded gun June 10 when he was shot twice in the chest and once in the hand.

SWEET HOME, Ore. (AP) – City Council members have agreed to continue adding fluoride to the water supply in Sweet Home, as the city has done for 50 years. Council members said it’s possible that residents will gather enough petitions to put the issue to a vote in some upcoming election. The chemical hardens tooth enamel and prevents decay. Opponents said a medicine shouldn’t be in the water supply.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – An advisory against water contact at Southern Oregon’s most popular reservoir has been lifted in time for the Fourth of July weekend. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says a blue-green algae bloom has dissipated from Lost Creek Lake, and samples show no unsafe levels of toxins. The blooms can produce potentially dangerous toxins, particularly when they die off.
