SEATTLE (AP) – David Ortiz hit the 449th home run of his career in the first inning, added a line drive RBI single off the wall in the third, and the Boston Red Sox avoided being swept with a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night. Ortiz drove in a run in the third on a line drive that barely cleared the glove of Seattle right fielder Stefan Romero.
SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have optioned Erasmo Ramirez to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled right-hander Brandon Maurer to pitch out of the bullpen. Ramirez struggled with control in his start Tuesday night, walking five and lasting just 4 1-3 innings. The decision to recall Maurer, who has transitioned from being a starter to pitching in relief, indicates another roster move on the horizon for Seattle.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks have signed rookie free agent wide receiver Kevin Smith after he was released by both Arizona and Jacksonville. Seattle signed Smith yesterday, a day after clearing a roster spot by releasing rookie defensive tackle Andre Pulu. Seattle is familiar with Smith because of proximity. He was a standout at Washington. Smith had 50 catches for 765 yards and four touchdowns.
SEATTLE (AP) – Former Washington football coach Jim Lambright was arrested last week for investigation of domestic violence, according to Snohomish County court documents. The 72-year-old was arrested June 18 for allegedly assaulting his 23-year-old granddaughter at his Snohomish home. Lambright has not been charged. A message left at Lambright’s number yesterday afternoon was not immediately returned.
