PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say an armed man arrested near an Oregon school where a student was killed told officers he was there to protect his sister. Authorities say that 21-year-old Joseff Powell was spotted going around a checkpoint Tuesday as students at Reynolds High School in Troutdale were being searched. Powell is not suspected of being involved in the campus attack. He could not be reached for comment.

TROUTDALE, Ore. (AP) – The mother of a 14-year-old boy killed at an Oregon high school says he loved his friends and sports, especially soccer. Jennifer Hoffman released a statement, a day after her son Emilio Hoffman was shot at Reynolds High School. She urged his friends to be happy like Emilio.

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. (AP) – The Jackson County sheriff says two deputies were serving an eviction order on an Ashland man Tuesday when he came out of his bedroom pointing a shotgun at them, and they shot and killed him. The sheriff says both deputies fired and 73-year-old Earl Harris was hit at least twice. Winters says it appears the deputy’s decision to fire was correct, but the case remains under investigation.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A 31-year-old Eastern Oregon man has been jailed on charges of killing a woman who was fatally beaten. She was identified as 24-year-old Samantha Brown. Authorities say Daniel Smith was arrested after a friend of his from Echo, south of Hermiston, reported the killing. Deputies found Brown’s body in a camp trailer where Smith was living.
