Elias pitches 3-hitter, Mariners top Tigers 4-0

SEATTLE (AP) – Rookie Roenis Elias pitched a three-hitter for the first complete game of his career, leading the Seattle Mariners over the Detroit Tigers 4-0 Sunday.

Elias struck out eight and walked one in his 12th major league start, and the first one to last longer than seven innings.

The 25-year-old left-hander from Cuba kept Detroit off balance with his curve, striking out five with the breaking ball. The Tigers only put one runner in scoring position, and Elias matched a career high with 111 pitches.

Max Scherzer gave up four runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.

WHITECAPS-TIMBERS

Whitecaps hold off Timbers 4-3

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Pedro Morales scored on a pair of penalty kicks and the Vancouver Whitecaps held off the Portland Timbers 4-3 in a Cascadia Cup rivalry match Sunday night.

Erick Hurtado and Jordan Harvey also scored for the Whitecaps, who beat the Timbers for the first time since the two teams joined Major League Soccer in 2011.

The victory extended Vancouver’s unbeaten streak to five straight matches. The Whitecaps played to a 2-all draw against the Seattle Sounders in another Cascadia Cup rivalry match last weekend.

The loss snapped a six-match unbeaten streak for the Timbers, who were coming off a success road trip with back-to-back wins against New York and Chivas USA.

Maximiliano Urruti, Gaston Fernandez and Will Johnson scored for Portland.

NCAA-OREGON ST-UNLV

Wetzler, Oregon State eliminate UNLV with 6-1 win

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Ben Wetzler allowed one run and struck out 10 in a four-hitter as top national seed Oregon State stayed alive in the NCAA Corvallis regional with a 6-1 victory over UNLV on Sunday.

The Beavers face UC Irvine in the nightcap. The Anteaters defeated Oregon State 14-2 Saturday night in the double-elimination regional.

With a win, the Beavers will force a deciding game on Monday.

Scoring just 17 runs in their last nine games, the Oregon State offense finally came to life in the sixth with five runs on five hits to take a 5-0 lead. Gabe Clark’s RBI single broke a 1-for-19 skid with runners in scoring position for the Beavers, and Kavin Keyes followed up with a two-run triple.

NCAA-OREGON-VANDERBILT

Vandy edges Oregon 3-2 to win regional

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Pinch-hitter Ro Coleman hit a walkoff single with the bases loaded to send Vanderbilt back to the super regionals with a 3-2 victory over Oregon on Sunday night.

Coleman, a 5-foot-5 freshman, was mobbed in right field after the hit as the Commodores defeated Oregon for the second time in as many days. The Ducks had slipped past Xavier 11-8 earlier Sunday.

The Commodores, playing in their sixth straight regional final, tied it at 2 in the bottom of the eighth when Bryan Reynolds legged out a potential double play by diving into first to drive home pinch-runner Will Cooper.

Oregon took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on three straight singles, the last by Kevin Minjares.

NCAA-GA TECH-WASHINGTON

Washington beats Georgia Tech 4-2 to advance

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) – Andrew Ely’s two-run homer helped lead Washington to a 4-2 victory over Georgia Tech on Sunday in the NCAA tournament’s Oxford regional.

Washington will play Mississippi on Monday for the regional championship. The Huskies must beat the Rebels twice to advance to the super regionals.

Washington starter Jared Fisher struggled with his command early, walking in two runs in the first inning. But Ely’s homer in the third tied the game at 2 and the Huskies tacked on two more runs in the sixth.

Reliever Brandon Choate earned the win for Washington, and Trevor Dunlap worked four scoreless innings to earn his sixth save. Braden Bishop had two hits.

The loss eliminated Georgia Tech from the tournament.

WCWS-OREGON-ALABAMA

Alabama beats Oregon, advances to title series

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – Haylie McCleney homered in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie and Alabama beat Oregon 2-0 on Sunday, setting up an all-Southeastern Conference best-of-three championship series in the Women’s College World Series.

The Crimson Tide will play Florida for the championship, starting Monday night. The Gators beat Baylor 6-3 earlier Sunday.

Alabama led 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh, giving the Ducks one last shot. Oregon’s Kailee Cuico’s single brought the tying run to the plate with no outs. Janelle Lindvall put one over the left-field fence, but it barely sailed foul, and she struck out looking on the next pitch.

Koral Costa singled with two outs to keep the Ducks alive, but Jaclyn Traina struck out the final batter to preserve her four-hitter.
