The Newport Cubs scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a one-one tie; then eased to a 6-1 baseball win last night over Siuslaw to end the Vikings’ season. Siuslaw ended the year 9-and-9 in Far West League Play, 11-and-12 overall.

Ducks Down da Bears…

Tommy Thorpe threw his first career complete game last night, leading the Oregon Ducks to a 5-1 Pac-12 baseball win at PK Park over the Cal Bears. Thorpe had held the Bears scoreless through the eighth inning and gave up a run with two outs in the ninth but convinced coach George Horton to let him finish… which he did on the next batter, striking him out after taking him to a full count.

The Ducks and Bears meet again tonight and tomorrow at PK Park in Eugene.

Beavers Seeking to Clinch

Number one ranked Oregon State will try to clinch at least a share of the Pac-12 baseball crown tonight in Los Angeles when they begin a three-game series against USC… that runs through Sunday.

NCAA Softball

The Oregon women are the number one seed in the NCAA Softball Playoffs. The Ducks will host 16-seed Minnesota beginning tomorrow at Howe Field in Eugene for a best-of-three super regional matchup. The winner will advance to the women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Track and Field Repeat Possible

The Siuslaw Viking Boys are looking for their second straight OSAA State Track and Field Championship this weekend at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene. It would be the first ever back-to-back for the boys.

Coach Chris Johnson is taking a strong lineup into competition but admits anything can happen.

Chris Johnson – “It’s, you know, it’s never easy. In the state track meet, it’s just… it’s always an up and down, ebb and flow kind of a thing and, you know, I wouldn’t trade this group for anybody. I think they’re battle tested, I think they’re ready to go, I think they’re tough, and we’re going to have some fun and see what we can do.”

Seven boys and four girls will be competing in 15 different events through tomorrow afternoon in Eugene.

Sailors Compete at Hayward as well

Three Mapleton Sailors will be competing at the 1A State Track and Field finals this weekend as well.  Chris Free, Justin Schaaf and Maddie Frelich will represent the Sailors.
