EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Lawyers for four gay and lesbian couples and the state of Oregon are urging a federal judge to strike down the state’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. Judge Michael McShane heard arguments on the case but did not say which way he was leaning. His questioning focused heavily on how he should apply precedents from higher courts. The state attorney general has refused to defend the gay-marriage ban.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police arrested a city worker accused of taking part in an auto-theft scheme. Police say 53-year-old Barbara Peterson was arrested at the Bureau of Transportation’s abandoned autos division. Investigators say Peterson provided information about abandoned vehicles to a rogue tow-truck driver in exchange for cash. The driver then towed the cars to where they would be crushed and sold as scrap metal.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Two Roseburg parents who took their 2-year-old to the emergency room because she was acting abnormally have been arrested after tests showed methamphetamine in her system. A Sheriff’s Office spokesman says investigators found drug paraphernalia with meth residue in the home, and they concluded the child got into the drug on her own. The child’s condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Federal authorities say a mixed martial arts fighter and instructor convicted in Clackamas County of attempted child sexual abuse has been deported. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement office says 39-year-old Hermes De Barros was convicted in 2012 of attempting to abuse a student under 14 at his academy.
