VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A woman delivering newspapers early today discovered a fire at a Vancouver house and helped the family safely escape. The woman saw smoke about 2 a.m. and knocked on the door to make sure everyone got out. KATU reports three family members escaped. No one was hurt.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – A priest who was removed as pastor of a Bend church is resigning from the Roman Catholic Church to start a new parish affiliated with the Evangelical Catholic Diocese of the Northwest. James Radloff says he’s excited to start a new church and rid himself of what he calls “an abusive relationship” with the Roman Catholic Church. KTVZ reports the church will allow same-sex marriages and birth control.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Humane Society says nearly 60 cats and kittens that had been living in a Newberg apartment have been rescued and taken to the society’s shelter in Portland. The Oregon Humane Society Executive Director says the owner gave up the cats after being overwhelmed by their care and feeding needs.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say cold case detectives arrested a 48-year-old man yesterday in the 1995 slaying of a man as he slept at his home in Portland. Danny Conner is accused of killing 24-year-old Darrin Ezell. Conner is scheduled for arraignment today.
