PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A federal judge in Oregon has found that an immigrant woman’s constitutional rights were violated when she was held in jail without probable cause at the request of U.S. immigration authorities. The ruling is one of several recent federal court decisions to place scrutiny on the practice of keeping people in jail after they’re eligible for release so that they can be considered for possible deportation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A group of Oregon sheriffs is opposing a move to grant driving privileges for people who can’t prove they’re legally in the United States. Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin says that 28 of 36 sheriffs urge a no vote to overturn a law the Legislature passed. The sheriffs’ decision complicates efforts by proponents of the law. They also say they’re motivated by public safety concerns.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — A Medford man convicted of killing his wife has been sentenced to a life term in prison. Bourne Huddleston, a 45-year-old former Marine gunnery sergeant, was found guilty of shooting his wife, Kristy, and leaving her for their 10-year-old son to find. Prosecutors said Huddleston would not be eligible for parole for 25 years

RIDDLE, Ore. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio has toured an abandoned copper mine in southwestern Oregon that is on the Superfund list of major pollution sites in preparation for filing legislation to overhaul the nation’s primary mining law. DeFazio says the tour of the Formosa Mine outside Riddle illustrates what is wrong fiscally about the 1872 Mining Act.
