HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – The Washington County sheriff’s office says it will no longer hold people for possible deportation. The Oregonian reports the decision follows a federal judge’s ruling that Clackamas County violated a woman’s constitutional rights by holding her for immigration authorities without probable cause.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Court of Appeals has thrown out the conviction of a Portland-area woman found guilty of starving her dog. The Oregonian reports the court found the conviction was based on evidence from a veterinarian who treated the animal without a warrant. The appeals court ruled that animals are personal property under the eyes of the law.

NEW YORK (AP) – A federal prosecutor has told a jury in opening statements in New York that an Egyptian Islamic preacher supported terrorism around the world as he used the cover of religion to hide his terrorist ways. Mustafa Kamel Mustafa (muh-STAH’-fuh kah-MEHL’ muh-STAH’-fuh) is accused of seeking to create an al-Qaida training camp in Oregon. His attorney says he has never harmed Americans.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – A body found in the Snake River on the Idaho-Oregon border carries the identification of a southwest Idaho man missing since late March. The Wallowa County Sheriff’s office says 42-year-old Ricky Flores of Caldwell went missing March 21 when his jet boat capsized. The body is taken to a medical examiner for positive identification.
