NEW YORK (AP) – Lawyers make opening statements today in the New York City trial of an Egyptian Islamic preacher charged with conspiring to support al-Qaida in part by trying to open a training camp in Oregon. Mustafa Kamel Mustafa (muh-STAH’-fuh kah-MEHL’ muh-STAH’-fuh) expects to testify to rebut government’s claims that he was a vital piece of the terrorism machinery before his 2004 arrest.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Washington state auditor’s office is questioning $17 million of the $188 million the state spent on plans to build a new Interstate 5 bridge across the Columbia River before the project was aborted. The Oregonian reports the audit says most of the money that went to about 30 subcontractors wasn’t properly documented.
UMATILLA, Ore. (AP) – A northeast Oregon prison is on lockdown after a fight involving two dozen inmates broke out yesterday in a housing unit. Spokeswoman Sherry Iles says Two Rivers Correctional Institution staff quickly stopped the fight. She says 24 inmates who were involved have been placed in special housing. Two inmates were treated for minor injuries.
LEWISTON, Maine (AP) – A student from Hood River, Ore., is facing charges for allegedly bursting into a stranger’s home and knocking over the elderly resident near his college in Maine. Mac Jackson is listed as a captain of the football team and a member of the lacrosse team at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Police say he was intoxicated.
