SEATTLE (AP) – Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EHN’-ehs SEHS’-peh-dehs) hit a two-run homer that broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning, lifting the Oakland Athletics over the Seattle Mariners 3-0 yesterday. Cespedes pulled a 2-2 slider from Charlie Furbush into the left-field bullpen. Cespedes’ second homer of the season came after Jed Lowrie drew a leadoff walk.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – LaMarcus Aldridge scored 26 points, including the go-ahead jumper in overtime, and the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Warriors 119-117 despite a season-high 47 points from Golden State’s Stephen Curry. Aldridge’s jumper with 39.9 seconds to go gave the Blazers a 118-117 lead. Damian Lillard added a free throw for Portland before Andre Iguodala missed a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Chris Wondolowski scored on a header in the 51st minute to help the San Jose Earthquakes tie the Columbus Crew 1-1 yesterday. Wondolowski has three goals this season for San Jose. Federico Higuain scored his fourth goal of the season with a left-footed strike in the 44th minute for Columbus. The Crew are unbeaten in three road games this year.
UNDATED (AP) __ Stanford’s Chiney Ogwumike (ah-GWOO’-mih-kay) and Baylor’s Odyssey Sims are the consensus top two picks in the WNBA draft. The Connecticut Sun are expected take to Ogwumike with the first pick in this year’s draft tonight at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., with Sims going to the Tulsa Shock at No. 2. San Antonio selects third, followed by New York, Indiana, Washington, Seattle, Atlanta and the Fever again at No. 9.
