SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Federal dollars that would have helped pay for a new Interstate 5 bridge over the Columbia River will be spent instead on highway maintenance projects in Oregon. State lawmakers approved $450 million in bonds in 2013, but the project fell apart when Washington lawmakers declined to match the funding. Potential projects include repaving roads and replacing or rehabilitating bridges throughout the state highway system.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Marion County officials say decreases in crime and recidivism are responsible for a decline in the number of people supervised by parole and probation officers. Cmdr. Jeff Wood tells the Statesman Journal that the division is seeing a 10-year low in supervised offenders. Statistics for the county that includes Salem show the monthly caseload has decreased since at least 2010.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A faculty strike set for next week at Portland State University has been averted. The Oregonian reports the union and administrators reached the deal at 5:30 a.m. yesterday. Both sides say PSU will give 2.5 percent cost-of-living raises over the next two years and increase the number of non-tenure-track instructors who receive long-term contracts, among other things.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Planners of the new Oregon State University-Cascades campus hope they can discourage students from driving to class by building a small number of parking spaces. University officials want to reduce the number of auto trips, but critics worry students will end up parking on residential streets and in commercial parking lots. The campus plans to build just 300 parking spots for 1,900 students.
