SEATTLE (AP) — Tonight Oregon State (24-10) women’s basketball team will play for a spot in the Sweet 16 when the ninth-seeded Beavers face No. 1 seed South Carolina. The Gamecocks (28-4) will be trying to erase the memories of last year when they were upset in the second round by Kansas.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Paul Konerko and Marcus Semien homered for the Chicago White Sox, who overcame Robinson Cano’s four RBIs in a 7-6 win over the Seattle Mariners yesterday. Cano went 2 for 4 with a three-run double in the seventh. After bolting the Yankees for a $240 million, 10-year contract with Seattle, the All-Star second baseman is batting .465 this spring.

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have released pitcher Scott Baker. The 32-year-old right-hander asked for his release after refusing an assignment to Triple-A Tacoma. The club made the move yesterday. Baker was 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in four spring training starts for Seattle, allowing nine earned runs and 16 hits in 12 innings.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki homered, Franklin Morales struck out seven over five innings in a strong audition for a spot in the Colorado rotation and the Rockies beat the Kansas City Royals 8-2 yesterday. Tulowitzki wrapped his third homer of spring training around the left field foul pole off former Rockies teammate Jeremy Guthrie in the second. He finished 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly and is hitting .160.
