PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A 23-mile stretch of Interstate 84 near Pendleton in northeast Oregon remains closed this morning because of hazardous driving conditions. ODOT says on the TripCheck website that the interstate is closed for an extended time. The highway was closed last night by fog and ice that caused multiple crashes.
GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) – High winds are blamed for knocking a tree into a light rail train late yesterday afternoon in Gresham. No one was injured. KGW-TV reports that TriMet says the tree crashed into a MAX Blue Line train, cracking glass windows. Shuttle buses were called to ferry the passengers.
FOREST GROVE, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters in Forest Grove have rescued an 18-year-old Pacific University freshman who got herself stranded in a large redwood tree late yesterday. The Oregonian reports campus security called for help when the student couldn’t climb down a tree near the library. She was stuck about 20 feet up. The unidentified student reportedly said she climbs trees as a hobby and usually gets down without help.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Zoo staffers in Portland are caring for three orphaned black bear cubs no bigger than puppies. A logging crew discovered the one male and two female cubs a week ago in a hollow log in western Yamhill County. The Oregonian says loggers worried that their work might have scared the mother bear away so they called Oregon Fish and Wildlife. The zoo often helps care for orphaned wildlife until permanent homes can be found for animals that aren’t releasable back to the wild.
