SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state Legislature is looking at rewriting the ballot title for a measure that would allow Oregon residents to get driver’s licenses if they can’t prove they’re legally in the United States. Voters will decide the issue in the November election. A House committee approved language yesterday that makes no reference to the issue of legal presence. The full House is scheduled to vote today on the change.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – One of Oregon’s most notable wildfires in 2012 caused a lot of smoke in populous areas of Central Oregon. The Bend Bulletin reports a study by state health and forestry workers now concludes that the fire burned more intensely and caused more destruction because the forests were overgrown after years of fire suppression. That’s a common finding in forests in Oregon.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – A man who tried to light a cigarette while pumping gasoline in Newport was seriously burned when the vapor ignited. Firefighters said they used a dry chemical to put out the fire Monday after a passer-by called for help. Authorities say the burns weren’t life-threatening, but the man was sent to a burn center and probably faces a lengthy recovery.

HUGO, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters and neighbors in the small southern Oregon community of Hugo managed to rescue a horse that had fallen into a deep mudhole. The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports the horse accidentally got into a closed-off portion of a pasture where it fell into the hole Monday evening.
