Local Non-Profits Gain

19 different non-profits are sharing $100-thousand in grants awarded this week from the Three Rivers Foundation.  Seven of those groups have direct local ties to western Lane and Douglas Counties.

Foundation leadership declined to specify the amount of each award.  The funding of which comes from proceeds at Three Rivers Casino.

Roger Gould (gold) with Mapleton Food Share says the money they received will be used to help provide emergency food boxes to an estimated 230 households in the area.

Jonathan Hicks picked up a check for $5,300.  That money will fund the Boys and Girls Club teen center next summer.  Hicks, the club executive, says that program touches 350 area youth.

Other local gifts went to the Cross Road Assembly Women’s Ministry; Siuslaw High School ASPIRE; the Lower Umpqua Community Center; St. Vincent de Paul Society financial counseling; and the Siuslaw Area Partnership to Prevent Substance Abuse.

Foundation Board Chair Mark Ingersoll said they received 176 applications… but had to limit the awards to only 19.

Fire Destroys RV

It was pretty much gone by the time firefighters were even called.  A blaze destroyed a 32-foot fifth wheel at Lake’s Edge Resort and Marina in Westlake yesterday afternoon.

A passer-by saw smoke and flames coming from the RV at about 1:30 afternoon and called 911 from the Westlake Post Office.

By the time engines arrived on scene there was nothing left to save; but firefighters did have a brief struggle to protect a nearby trailer from the flames.  That structure sustained damage to the siding and cracked windows from the heat.

The RV destroyed was the principal residence of Bill Mumpower.  He was away at the time.  There’s no information yet as to the cause or the dollar amount of loss.

Mapleton to replace snow days

Students at Mapleton Schools will have to make up one day of lost class time and staff will have to come in for an additional day-and-a-half as the result of the loss of four school days last week.

The Mapleton School Board adopted changes to the upcoming calendar because of the snow and icy road conditions.  Superintendent Jodi O’Mara said a professional development day for staff will be added Friday January 10th, plus an already half-day set aside for parent conferences in April will be extended to a full day.

Normally there’s no school on Fridays, but students will make up a day of classes January 24th.

Winter Solstice

A Winter Solstice celebration featuring a bonfire and outdoor events will be celebrated tomorrow in Yachats.  Several different organizations in the Village of Yachats are teaming up to provide the bonfire at the picnic shelter behind the Yachats Commons.  The fire will be lit at 4:30… the event will be followed by a chili and cornbread feed for only five dollars.
