SEATTLE (AP) – An Oregon man is among this year’s group of 32 Rhodes Scholars from the United States. Joshua Aiken of Eugene is a senior at Washington University in St. Louis, where he is majoring in American culture studies and political science. He is interested in human rights advocacy and has done work on ethnic conflict in Ireland and Germany. The scholars were announced Sunday. Three young people from Washington state also were selected.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon faces millions in costs to improve the security of driver’s licenses, or the federal government could eventually refuse to recognize Oregon IDs for things such as boarding a plane. The Salem Statesman Journal reports officials put the cost at more than $16 million over the next six years. Oregon meets only 28 of 39 standards in the REAL ID Act, and the compliance deadline is past. State spokesman David House says a new deadline might be coming this winter with a grace period for people from states that don’t comply.

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) – An eight-month journey has ended in New Hampshire with a bottle of champagne, a bucket of water and a bunch of carrots. Thirty-seven-year-old Alex Jesse McNeil road his horse, Pepper, 3,800 miles from coast to coast, starting in Brookings, Ore., and ending Saturday at New Hampshire’s Hampton Beach. He did it mostly for the adventure, but told the Portsmouth Herald he also wanted to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and open space.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A Mormon group is asking women to wear pants to church on a Sunday in mid-December to show support for inclusiveness. The first “Wear Pants to Church Day” was held in December 2012 to show solidarity for women’s equality. Organizer Nancy Ross says the goal of this year’s event is to encourage The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to continue to be more progressive and inclusive. Ross and co-organizer Jerilyn Hassell Pool of Oregon are promoting the event on their website and on a Facebook page.
