Jeremy Lin and Patrick Beverley each added 12 points for the Rockets. Damian Lillard scored 22 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 to lead the Blazers, who fell after winning two in a row. Wesley Matthews added 19 points.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Antoine Vermette scored the deciding goal in the shootout for the second straight game and the Phoenix Coyotes won their fifth in a row last night, 3-2 over the Vancouver Canucks. Vermette, who gave the Coyotes a victory at San Jose on Saturday, trickled the puck just past the line in the sixth round of this tiebreaker. Henrik Sedin lost control of the puck on his chance after Vermette’s goal, and the Coyotes skated off with their third consecutive shootout win.
SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have hired Detroit Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon to be their next manager. The Mariners announced their decision yesterday. McClendon replaces Eric Wedge who walked away at the end of the season, citing differences with the front office on how to move forward with the Mariners’ rebuilding process. Wedge’s contract expired after the season.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Guard Dominic Artis and forward Ben Carter have been suspended by the No. 19 Oregon Ducks for violating NCAA rules against selling team-issued apparel. The length of the suspensions has not been determined and officials did not provide details about what the players sold. Oregon said it uncovered the violation internally and reported it to both the Pac-12 and the NCAA.
BELLEVUE, Wash. (AP) – Investigators have determined that a fire that damaged the Bellevue, Wash., home of Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez started in the laundry room. A police spokesman says the cause of the Monday fire remains under investigation. Hernandez and his wife, Sandra, were in Napa, Calif., at the time.
