Siuslaw’s Mitchell Butler claimed the boys individual 4A Cross Country Championship in 15:37 Saturday morning. Mack Marbas was four seconds behind him in 2nd; Seth Campbell came in sixth, and the Siuslaw Vikings took second place in the team competition behind La Salle. Phoenix was third; the Marshfield Pirates fourth.
In the girls race, Viking Freshman Celie Mans was third overall in the individual race. Molalla won the team championship, followed by Phoenix and Siuslaw. North Bend was seventh.
The Far West League didn’t fare very well in the opening round of the OSAA 4A volleyball playoffs. All three teams in competition were bounced from the bracket.
The Siuslaw Vikings fell to the Tigers in La Grande Saturday afternoon three sets to nothing. The loss ended the Vikings’ season. They wound up with a 9-3 league record; second place in the Far West and 17-5 overall.
Ridgeview edged league champions Marshfield 3-2; Banks rolled over Sutherlin in three.
Prep football – Vikings advance
On the gridiron, Siuslaw backup Preston Mitchell completed 13 of 15 passes for 225 yards and five touchdowns and the Siuslaw Vikings easily outpaced the Sweet Home Huskies 49 -21 Friday night at home. Mitchell carried the ball ten times for one more touchdown and 67 yards. Senior wide receiver Samuel Johnson caught eight passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns, plus had a 36 yard punt return in the game.
The Vikings will travel to Gladstone High School Friday night for a seven o’clock game against the Gladiators in the next round of the 4A playoffs.
North Bend will host Cascade. Two other Far West teams were eliminated Friday night. Seaside edged South Umpqua 50-47; Henley downed Douglas 20 -6.
Trojans come away from Corvallis with rare win
Turning to the Pac-12; The USC Trojans came away from Corvallis with a win for the first time since 2004 after a 31-14 win over the Oregon State Beavers Friday night. Sean Mannion threw for 277 yards and a touchdown, but also threw an uncharacteristic thee interceptions in the loss; the second straight for the Beavers after a six game win streak.
