SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture is issuing a public health alert for raw chicken packaged at three Foster Farms facilities in California after nearly 300 people fell ill. The USDA says that strains of salmonella are associated with chicken distributed to retail outlets in California, Oregon and Washington state. A Foster Farms spokesman says the infections were caused by eating undercooked or improperly handled chicken.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A Portland woman says she rationed food and water and used a hot water bottle at night when she was snowed in on the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington. Alejandra Wilson told The Oregonian yesterday that she saw a search helicopter but couldn’t get its attention. Wilson was rescued Saturday after eight days in the wilderness.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon Youth Authority spokesman says a search for contraband sparked a riot at a youth prison. An Oregon Youth Authority spokesman told the Statesman-Journal that 11 inmates took part in the Sunday night melee at the Rogue Valley Youth Correctional Facility in Grants Pass. Superintendent Ken Jerin told the Grants Pass Daily Courier yesterday that two SWAT teams came and the youth gave up around midnight.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say a great-grandson of the victim was one of two teens arrested in the death of a 71-year-old suburban Portland woman. Police arrested the two in the dead woman’s Lexus after a high-speed chase. Investigators say Jacqueline Bell died of blunt force trauma in her Cedar Mill home on Saturday.
