Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) – Prince Fielder had three hits and scored the tiebreaking run in the seventh on a close play at the plate, leading the Detroit Tigers over the Seattle Mariners 5-4 yesterday. Detroit trailed after Seattle’s Dustin Ackley hit a three-run homer in the fifth, but Fielder’s RBI single in the seventh tied it. Then he scored from first when Victor Martinez doubled off Charlie Furbush.

SEATTLE (AP) – Nintendo video game pioneer Hiroshi Yamauchi is remembered in Seattle for saving the Mariners baseball team. There was talk of the team moving to Florida in 1992 when then-Sen. Slade Gorton tried to find local owners and contacted Nintendo of America, in the suburb of Redmond. Gorton says Yamauchi purchased the team as a civic gesture because Nintendo had done well in the area and he felt an obligation to the community. Yamauchi died yesterday in Japan. He was 85.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Expectations are so high in the Seahawks locker room that what’s impressive to others is merely acceptable to them. In two games, Seattle’s swarming defense has surrendered only 10 points, shutting down Carolina and San Francisco. They’ve made Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernick look confused, created game-changing turnovers and shown just how much fun it is making the game miserable for others. Now, the Seahawks’ D is getting praise for how it’s started the season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Maya Moore has been one of the most celebrated women’s basketball players to ever take the court. She was a star in high school and a star at UConn before the Minnesota Lynx drafted her No. 1 overall in 2011. Now in her third season in the WNBA, Moore has become the virtuoso in the pro game that everyone expected. She was named Western Conference player of the month in August and September. Moore’s Lynx open the postseason with a game against Seattle tonight.
