Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) – Hisashi Iwakuma extended his scoreless innings streak on the road to 25 and Justin Smoak homered off Justin Verlander to help Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 8-0 last night. Iwakuma matched his career high going eight innings, giving up just four hits and one unintentional walk. His 25-inning scoreless streak on the road matches a franchise record.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – They’re 2-0 coming off an impressive performance the entire nation got to see and Pete Carroll is still not satisfied. Seattle’s offensive execution has left plenty to be desired. Penalties and a sluggish run game hampered the Seahawks in the opener against Carolina. In Week 2 against the 49ers, it was again problems with penalties, but this time it was the Seahawks pass game that was deemed lacking. Making those fixes could become more difficult if starting left tackle Russell Okung is out for a significant period. Carroll has ruled him out for Sunday’s game against Jacksonville due to an injured toe.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti is a perfectionist. While the Ducks have allowed opponents an average of just 9 points per game, Aliotti says he’s always looking to turn good into great. Truth be told, while Oregon’s opponents have not really challenged the second-ranked Ducks, the defense has increasingly shown its dexterity, most recently against Tennessee and its big offensive line. It’s no secret that Oregon’s quick-strike offense is also making the defense better.

SEATTLE (AP) – Former Washington football coach Don James will begin chemotherapy next week for a malignant tumor on his pancreas. James’ family released a statement through the school yesterday morning. James had two surgical procedures earlier this month at Virginia Mason Medical Center for what was called a gastro-intestinal issue. The 80-year-old James coached at Washington from 1975-1992 and led the Huskies to a share of the 1991 national championship.
