SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber says he’ll call Oregon lawmakers into special session to vote on measures affecting taxes, public-employee pensions and the regulation of genetically modified crops. Kitzhaber said yesterday he’ll call lawmakers to Salem on Sept. 30. The announcement caps months of negotiations with House and Senate leaders from both parties.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – The White House is threatening to veto a bill to boost logging on national forests, including a provision aimed at producing more money for timber counties in Oregon. The Statement of Administration Policy issued yesterday says if the bill were presented to President Barack Obama, his senior advisers would recommend a veto. It says the bill would harm national forests and the government’s obligations to manage them by sidestepping environmental laws.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 19-year-old woman told Portland police she was sexually assaulted while sleeping in a car. Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers responded early yesterday to the lower southeast industrial area. The woman told police she was sleeping in her friend’s car in downtown Portland – on the other of the Willamette River- when she awoke with a stranger assaulting her. Simpson says it’s unclear how the woman and the vehicle got to lower southeast industrial area.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Authorities have arrested a 53-year-old woman accused of crashing into a Medford police car while eluding officers at a Fred Meyer parking lot. Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau says officers responded late Tuesday to a report of a woman driving recklessly while making bizarre statements. The driver failed to stop for officers and hit the police car while leaving the parking lot. Budreau says officers used a stun gun to take the woman – Lauri Lee Story of Tracy, Calif. – into custody.
