HOUSTON (AP) – Rookie Brett Oberholtzer pitched a four-hitter and Jason Castro hit an RBI double in the eighth inning to lift the Houston Astros to a 2-0 win over the Seattle Mariners yesterday. The 24-year-old Oberholtzer struck out five and walked one. He did not allow an extra-base hit in his sixth career start and ninth appearance to lower his ERA to 2.79. Oberholtzer and Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma matched zeros into the eighth inning.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Now that the initial shock has worn off, the Oregon State Beavers are left with assessing the damage. On the surface, there’s no question where the blame for the loss to lower-division Eastern Washington lies: Eagles quarterback Vernon Adams put up video-game type numbers on the hapless Oregon State defense, throwing for 411 yards and rolling up 107 on the ground in the 49-46 upset victory Saturday.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota says it was a little strange seeing Mark Helfrich roaming the sideline during a game. Helfrich spent the past four seasons watching the Ducks from up in the booth at Autzen Stadium as offensive coordinator. But now that Chip Kelly has moved on to the NFL, Helfrich is getting a close-up view of the No. 3 Ducks. Oregon defeated Nicholls 66-3 on Saturday in the season opener. It was never really a contest, more of a shake-off-the-rust game for the Ducks.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Suzann Pettersen won the Safeway Classic for the second time in three years yesterday, taking advantage of playing partner Yani Tseng’s final-round collapse at Columbia Edgewater. Three strokes behind leader Tseng entering the round, Pettersen closed with a 5-under 67 for a two-stroke victory over second-ranked Stacy Lewis.
