SEATTLE (AP) – A.J. Pierzynski hit a three-run homer, Mitch Moreland had a solo shot and the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 8-3 last night. Alex Rios had two hits and two RBIs as the Rangers picked up their fifth win in seven games. Elvis Andrus had three hits and an RBI. Kyle Seager hit his 20th home run of the season for the Mariners.
SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have activated outfielder Franklin Gutierrez from the disabled list and recalled him from his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. In 18 games for Seattle, Gutierrez is .267 with five home runs and 11 RBI. Seattle also designated right-hander Aaron Harang for assignment.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks are dealing with injuries on their defensive front and penalties as they enter the final week of preseason action. Five players expected to contribute significantly along the Seahawks’ defensive line may not be able to play for the start of the regular season. Among them: defensive tackle Jesse Williams, who was placed on injured reserve, defensive tackle Jordan Hill is sidelined with a strained biceps and nose tackle Brandon Mebane injured his groin in practice.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State coach Mike Riley has named Sean Mannion the starting quarterback for the No. 25 Beavers ahead of their season opener on Saturday against Eastern Washington. The announcement yesterday was the culmination of the fall camp competition between Mannion and Cody Vaz, who both played at quarterback last season.
SEATTLE (AP) – Washington coach Steve Sarkisian says star tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins has not been cleared medically to play in Saturday’s season opener against No. 19 Boise State while recovering from a broken right pinkie. Sarkisian also did not address during his news conference yesterday whether Seferian-Jenkins would play should he be medically cleared.
