Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Humane Society is investigating deaths of marine animals at the Portland Aquarium, which opened in December. The Oregonian reports more than 200 marine animals died this spring from starvation, infection, high temperatures, and attacks on each other. The aquarium’s former veterinarian said it failed to properly quarantine new arrivals and delayed emergency treatment to save money. Aquarium owner Vince Covino says the death rate is consistent with what he’s observed at other aquariums.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a 79-year-old woman has been rescued after her car ran off U.S. 101 north of Newport and plunged at least 50 feet down a cliff yesterday afternoon. Troopers say a Lincoln County rope rescue team responded, rappelled down the cliff, and freed Mary Fischer from the car. The Siletz-area resident was flown to a Corvallis hospital with what were described as serious injuries.

THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) – Strong winds in the Columbia River Gorge have allowed an Oregon wildfire to grow to nearly 8 square miles, forcing evacuation of several homes while other residents wait to hear if they are going to have to leave as well. The Government Flats Complex of fires is burning in hilly country near The Dalles, a Columbia River city that’s a favorite hangout for windsurfers.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say a man robbed a Bank of the West branch, walked outside and grabbed a taxi. Sgt. Pete Simpson said a dye packet in the stolen money exploded yesterday as the man sat in the taxi’s back seat, covering his hands in red paint. So the suspect got out of the cab and ran through a construction site where two workers knocked him down and held him for police.
