THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) – Strong and shifting winds are pushing an Oregon wildfire that has burned across 7.8 square miles in the Columbia River Gorge, forcing the evacuation of several dozen structures. Spokesman David Morman says he had no reports of any homes burning yesterday in the Government Flats Complex of fires. However, he says one of two structures that burned Sunday had been used as a residence. Morman says about 55 structures were ordered evacuated yesterday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland fire officials say a grass fire on a Columbia River island has been contained after prompting evacuations of some campers. Smoke from the fire caused evening rush hour disruptions on several area freeways and roads yesterday. Government Island lies between Portland and Vancouver, Wash.

TOLLGATE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say one person was killed on a northeast Oregon highway when a log truck lost its load and rolled, with the logs striking two vehicles. Lt. Gregg Hastings says the truck was eastbound on State Highway 204 west of Tollgate yesterday afternoon when the logs began to come off the trailer as the vehicle rounded a curve in the road. The truck and trailer rig rolled onto its side.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The state Employment Department has released it county-by-county job figures, and the numbers show the Portland metropolitan area continuing to outperform the state. The region has gained jobs for eight straight months. In Multnomah County, Oregon’s most populous, the jobless rate held steady at 7.1 percent, which is below the national average of 7.4 percent and state average of 8 percent. Clackamas and Washington counties are below 7 percent.
