ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Alex Cobb pitched five strong innings in his first big league game since being hit in the head by a batted ball two months ago and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Seattle Mariners 7-1 last night. Cobb ended his night by striking out Nick Franklin on a full-count pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth. He received a standing ovation as he walked off the field.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) – Jack Carper homered, Dalton Chandler hit a double and a triple and drove in a run and Sammamish, Wash., beat Corpus Christi, Texas, 8-4 in the first round of the Little League World Series yesterday. Carper and Chandler both went 3-for-4. Sammamish moves into the winner’s bracket and won’t have to play again until Sunday.
SEATTLE (AP) – Epiphanny Prince scored 12 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Chicago Sky rallied from 16 points down in the second half to beat the Seattle Storm 79-66 last night. Swin Cash scored 18 points against her former team and Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Sky. Shekinna Stricklen scored 20 points to lead Seattle.
SEATTLE (AP) – A draft of the environmental impact study for a proposed NBA arena in Seattle has been released. There will now be a 45-day review period during which the public can comment on the study, including at two public meetings. The comment period will end Sept. 30. Investor Chris Hansen has proposed a $490 million arena with $290 million in private investment in Seattle’s SoDo area in the hopes of bringing the NBA back.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Marcus Mariota is planning to take on more than just a few extra pounds this season. Oregon’s softspoken quarterback, who bulked up with 12 pounds of muscle this summer, says he’s ready to break out and become a more vocal leader of the Ducks in his sophomore year. He already has an impressive skillset. Last season as a redshirt freshman, Mariota set the team’s single-season record with 38 touchdowns, surpassing the previous mark of 36 set in 1998 and tied in 2011.
