Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) – Felix Hernandez blanked Milwaukee on four hits for eight innings and the Seattle Mariners topped the Brewers 2-0 yesterday. Hernandez struck out nine and walked one in his first career appearance against the Brewers. The 2010 AL Cy Young winner leads the league with a 2.28 ERA and is second with 178 strikeouts. This was the eighth time this year that he pitched at least eight innings.

SEATTLE (AP) – Tina Thompson had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Tanisha Wright added 16 points and the Seattle Storm earned a 69-63 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars yesterday. Wright’s two free throws with 10.9 seconds left made it a two-possession game. Camille Little also had a double-double for Seattle, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

SEATTLE (AP) – Kevin Durant hoisted 62 shots and scored 63 points, played all but 15 seconds in 51 minutes of game time. All that, and he still had time for pictures and autographs. Durant took part in the Jamal Crawford Summer Pro-Am in Seattle yesterday. It was his first time back in Seattle in a basketball capacity since the SuperSonics left for Oklahoma City in 2008.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Pete Carroll came away from Seattle’s preseason opener impressed with how his younger players who had impressed were just as strong in the Seahawks first game situation. The Seahawks returned to practice yesterday for the first time since their preseason win over San Diego. The practice saw the return of backup running back Robert Turbin, who had yet to participate in training camp due to a foot injury.

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) – The New York Jets have released running back John Griffin with an injury, and signed running back Kahlil Bell and wide receiver Rahsaan Vaughn. Griffin broke his left leg in the team’s 26-17 loss to Detroit on Friday night, when he was taken down on a horse-collar tackle by Travis Lewis. Vaughn was an undrafted free agent who played two years at the University of Oregon after two seasons at the College of San Mateo.
