TROUTDALE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say it took firefighters and a medic nearly three hours to rescue a 19-year-old Portland man who tumbled about 100 feet down a steep trail east of Portland. Corbett fire officials say rescuers first had to stabilize Justin Bitterlich yesterday, then strap him into a stretcher and haul him up using ropes so he could be flown to a Portland hospital where he’s listed in fair condition.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A 47-year-old Oregon caregiver has been sentenced to nearly 5 years in prison for her theft of more than $200,000 in Social Security benefits since a man she was caring for died. Federal prosecutors said Carel June Cody of Cottage Grove concealed the 1996 death of John Arnold and buried his body on private rural property. Prosecutors say Cody forged the dead man’s name on Social Security checks payable to herself after his benefits were electronically sent to his bank account each month.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. (AP) – A fire official in Forest Grove says a woman who tried to carry a flaming pan out of her home wound up injuring her neck and back when she jumped out a first-story window to escape the fire. The Oregonian reports fire officials said last night the unidentified woman was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not available.

LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says two gray wolves discovered this spring in eastern Oregon’s Blue Mountains between Pendleton and La Grande have at least three pups. A remote camera documented the pups July 21.
