ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – A two-alarm fire early today damaged the century-old Willamette Community Church in Albany. The fire was reported after 2 a.m. by the assistant pastor who responded to a security alarm and smelled smoke. Albany fire officials say the fire started in the basement and went to two alarms because it spread into the walls, floors and ceilings.

WARM SPRINGS, Ore. (AP) – A wildfire covering more than 15 square miles forced the evacuation of an Oregon resort over the weekend and caused road closures. KTVZ reports that the fire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation raced across rangeland, aided by hot temperatures and wind. Investigators suspect the fire was human-caused.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a 49-year-old man has been arrested after making threats with a gun at Brooklyn Park in southeast Portland yesterday morning. Officers were flagged down by people who told officers the man was making threats with a gun. He also allegedly had a homemade explosive device in a bag. His name wasn’t immediately released.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – A South Dakota man is trying to persuade a skeptical mix of hops farmers, food-freezing companies and brewers that he has a way to a produce a tastier beer. The Idaho Business Review reports that Steve Polley says freezing the hops will preserve more flavor for breweries and result in a higher quality beer. He’s been working with the Deschutes Brewery in Oregon to test his hops on some different batches. But farmers say they’re concerned freezing will turn the hops mushy.
