ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – A delegation from Astoria returned this week from a visit to a sister city in Germany and was greeted by objections to the expense. The city paid $1,800 each in airfare to send the mayor, four council members, city manager and sister city committee chairman. Residents such as Leon Jackson told the Daily Astorian the money could have gone to restore positions or fix streets. Mayor Willis Van Dusen said the expenditure was discussed in public, and the council agreed it was justified.

PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) – Olympic National Park says a 28-year-old Oregon man died after a fall while climbing near Mount Olympus’ summit on Saturday. A spokeswoman says Richard Grey Liston of Portland was with another climber on the east face of the mountain when he fell. The Peninsula Daily News reports other climbers in the area saw him fall. One of those climbers, a paramedic, reached Liston and reported that he had died.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – The Umatilla school board is considering requiring random drug tests for students who want to take part in extracurricular activities. The East Oregonian reports that there aren’t any apparent problems with drugs in Umatilla schools. At the 370-student high school last year, there was only one drug incident involving marijuana on campus last year. But the superintendent says the interest in a random drug testing policy is borne out of concern over drug use off-campus.

RENO, Nev. (AP) – U.S. Bureau of Land Management officials say they plan to remove only 1,300 wild horses and burros from the range across the West this summer because of budget constraints and overflowing holding pens. Most of the BLM’s summer roundups will be conducted in Nevada. Roundups also are scheduled in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico and Oregon.
