NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – A high school teacher and coach from Bend helped four teenage swimmers who were being carried away by a rip current on a beach near Newport. KTVZ reports Nathan Neil was reluctant to talk about what he did or call it heroic, but the station confirmed he took a bodyboard and plunged into the surf twice. Each time he helped two struggling swimmers who were swept more than 50 yards from shore. Neil teaches social studies and coaches football and wrestling at Summit High School.

SPRAY, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a motorcycle rider was killed in a collision with a deer yesterday on Highway 19 west of the town of Spray in Wheeler County. Troopers say a driver who came upon the scene found the downed motorcycle, rider and dead deer on the highway. The 63-year-old motorcycle rider died at the scene.

WOODBURN, Ore. (AP) – Police are asking for tips to track down the vandals who attacked a retirement community at Woodburn, spray-painting homes, cutting vehicle brake lines and loosening tires. Dozens of homes were hit early Saturday at the Estates Golf and Country Club community, a development for residents 55 and older.

MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) – A wooden bear statue stolen last Friday has been returned to a Milwaukie bar after an anonymous caller reported seeing it on Facebook. Surveillance video and Facebook images led police to Corey Harris and Trevor Modar. Both men claim the caper was a prank and had planned to return the bear.
